First Aid

First Aid

There are always bad things that can happen out in nature. It is best to be prepared and have some sort of first aid kit handy with you. There are many different levels of first aid kits, but due to the fact that I am not a doctor or a nurse, the one I use is considerably small. I would get lost if I brought splints, tons of medication, cold packs, burn shields, space blankets... Instead I carry the handful of things I know how to use and rely on emergency services if anything is severe.

Stacked Wooden Logs

The first option is to buy a premade first aid kit. These can be minimal as well as very over the top. I would suggest whatever you are comfortable with. If you plan on a lot of hiking or other activities you might want to consider how heavy the kit is as you may want to be carrying it around with you while you are doing your activities.

The items that we keep in our first aid kit.

Adhesive Bandages - These are great for cuts and scrapes of the smaller variety.

Alcohol Swabs/Wipes - Especially for cuts and scrapes it is good to keep things clean and this is much easier than lugging around a bottle of alcohol and cotton swabs.

Anti-Diarrheal Meds - The changes in diet and exercise that accompany camping often lead to a change in the digestive process, these are a life saver.

Duct Tape - I mean, you can use it for anything.

Elastic Bandage - Useful for wrapping rolled joints, if you are clumsy like me, your ankles will be happy you have this laying around.

Ibuprofen - Simple pain reliever, anti-inflammatory, and fever reducer.

Kinesiology Tape - This is tape that supports muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Relieves pain and is useful for nagging injuries.

Moleskin - These are another type of adhesive bandage that helps prevent and protect blisters.

QuikClot - A gauze that aids in the clotting of cuts.

Tweezers - Great thing to have handy for splinters.
