Food

Food

Food is a pretty wide and vague category. When you are looking at glamping, food is pretty much anything you want. But, when you are car camping the options are a little less wide.

You have to consider how you are going to cook. Are you bringing pots and pans and a portable stove? Are you planning to cook on a grate over a campfire? Are you going to use one of those built in charcoal grills you see at so many campsites? Or maybe you don’t want to cook at all.

I am not a big fan of camping cooking unless I have a sink or wash basin. The cleanup to me is too big of a hassle. But many campsites provide a sink near the restrooms where you can clean up.

When cooking while camping the easier things are largely meat dishes. Sausage and potatoes, steak, chicken, anything that can be grilled really. But the important part is the spices. You can grill at a campsite, but making things taste good is another question altogether. You also can easily cook a can of vegetables. You will unfortunately need to bring a pot as the cans they use nowadays often contain toxic materials that will release under extreme heat. But, pork and beans, peas, green beans, corn… Just pour into a pot and heat them up. Keep on the lookout for Camplopedia’s outdoor cooking section sometime in the future.

You also want to consider non-cooking items. Sandwiches, cereal, chips, protein bars, crackers, smores… of course. These are good to have around and easy to snack on although they don’t give you that camp feast feeling.

When you go the opposite direction of glamping and end up backpacking you will likely start with the dehydrated meals. You have to add water before you cook them which is good because you aren’t carrying around heavy water loaded foods. These are similar to military MREs (Meal Ready to Eat). They have a wide variety of meals and can be cooked on a portable gas stove.
