Matches and Lighters
Such a simple subject. Matches and lighters seem like you can just grab anything at the gas station and not have to worry about it. But, like all smokers know, not all lighters or matches are created the same.
Wind can be a huge problem with lighters and matches. When there is wind you can either get the windproof lighter which is basically a little torch or you can get a Zippo. I have always found Zippo’s to be a higher quality brand and typically easier to light things with. The torch lighters are fine, but typically have a very short flame that has a small contact area. Zippos are on the expensive side, but you don’t replace them, just refill them with lighter fluid. Speaking of you probably want to have lighter fluid also since Zippo’s tend to run out of fluid without much notice.
I personally like to have a long stemmed lighter to get harder to reach area’s lit. For car camping or glamping this should be fine it isn’t much extra gear. Truthfully for glamping you should have a few lighters and some lighter fluid on hand.
If you are starting to look into backpacking I expect the idea of matches to be a more popular idea. Or maybe you just don’t like lighters and want to stick with matches. I would suggest strike anywhere waterproof matches. Mostly because you never know what conditions you will be in. Or one of the super tiny lighters that work similar to a Zippo with lighter fluid, but are so small they weigh almost nothing.
