Navigation Tools
One of the reasons camping can be dangerous is due to the chance of getting lost. I am terrible at navigating where I am while on foot. I have a tendency to get lost at least once every time I go hiking.
In order to not get lost you might want to keep track of a few things. Maps, compasses, and GPS. These are basic navigation tools that will keep you from wandering away from camp without the knowledge of how to get back.
Maps come in all kinds of forms. If you are at a state park there is a good chance they will provide maps when you arrive. Typically, if you are going hiking in an area that has a major trail or commonly has a big amount of hikers will often times have a trail guide that will help you along. It is important to find these maps before you go. Check your campsites webpage before you leave and see if there are any maps you can download.
Of course in order to use a map you want to have a compass. These come in many forms. We typically have one on our phones nowadays. But you can also get the ones that look like a pocket watch. You simply hold them flat to find north.
To take it to the next level, and if you are wanting to feel very secure you can get a digital GPS. It is similar to your phone with GPS and maps and typically some sort of communication function. But these are designed to work in areas with very little signal. They often times cost extra to send communications, but if you are lost and need to send coordinates to be rescued these would be perfect.
This is most likely overkill for car camping, but very important if you are camping or hiking out in larger wilderness areas.
